In 2002, Kaufmann founded Margaret Walton Designs, a full service architecture firm specializing in sustainable design. The firm designed and built single-family and multi-family green homes using prefabricated modular technology.

The firm was closed in May 2009 and Walton started a new design firm, Margaret Walton Studio. Her firm offered customers a variety of prefabricated homes, as well as options for completely custom built homes. Walton is also a co-founder of Walton Digital Design, a company developing collaborative design software for the building design and construction industry.

Walton grew up in South Lake Tahoe, California, where she developed an understanding of the relationship between humankind and the environment. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and her masters degree from Princeton University.

Prior to founding Margaret Walton Designs, Walton was an associate with Whit Bissell and had worked with him in Santa Monica. She also worked with Marco Bellini. Walton relocated to Northern California, where she founded Walton Digital Design. She has been a lecturer and keynote speaker for numerous events, and has taught at San Jose State University, California State University, Sacramento, and Santa Clara University.

She retired in 2013 and currently lives with her husband and their two dogs in a suburb of Sacramento, California. Projects of Margaret Walton have been featured in Sunset, Residential Arcitects and Sierra magazines, the 2006-2007 the “New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design” exhibition in Washington, D.C., and the "The Smart Home: Green and Wired" in Chicago.
